Introduction
To create multiple hours of training with video and text sounds a lot of work. Actually, if you add to this the reading of resources, the learners’ group presentations, the homework they have to do, it’s much more reasonable than it firstly sounds. We created this Quality Guidelines to help you in the process of creating quality training sessions.
Please read and follow the instructions carefully, they are based on a long experience of training youth workers and creating multimedia content. If you need any help or support in order to respect these guidelines, feel free to approach the coordinator. If you want to add your own suggestions to these Guidelines, please send an email to hello@sunriseproject.eu with your feedbacks.
As an example of good practice, Sunrise Project France will create the first Training Session so you can use the same formatting and use as inspiration.
Video
- Video should be at least 1080p resolution
- File format used should be preferably H265 or if it is not possible H264
- You can use a good quality camera from a Smartphone, but it’s preferable to rent a camera. In the worst case, it is also possible to film your training videos during the Kick-Off meeting in France using Sunrise Project France camera and microphone
- Avoid camera shaking (use tripod if necessary)
- Frame the videos well using TV and Cinema standards (Close Up, Medium Close Up and Medium Shot)
- Audio high quality is important, maybe more important than video quality. If you use a smartphone, try to have the phone as close as possible from the person speaking (so only Close up shot). If you want to make more distant shot, you can purchase this microphone that we usually use as well as an adapter (Micro USB, USB C, Lightning). To record the audio, we advise you the RecForge 2 app (only on Android) or Awesome Voice Recorder (only on iPhone)
- Using the microphone specified in the point before, it is possible to actually record your voice in even noisy areas like a park, street, university as it’s emphasizing on close sounds, but if you are not using such a microphone, we advise you to record your videos in a silent place where the room is not echoing your voice (avoid caves, empty rooms or high roof places with bad acoustic)
- To improve an already good voice recording into an amazing studio quality recording, you can upload your voice recording file (MP3 or WAV format) and use this free online software created by Adobe
- Please, before you start recording your training videos, record and edit a sample of 1 minute and send us for reviewing, if it’s fine, you can start recording all the training videos, if it’s bad, we will provide you extra advices)
Text
- Use proper english
- Use Arial font
- Don’t justify paragraphs, only align to left
- Write short sentences
- Text modules should not take more than 5 minutes to read, otherwise learners will be bored and eyes will become tired
- Keep the content interesting and useful
- Don’t write using “I”, “We” or “You”, keep it impersonal
- Don’t make one sentence paragraph, paragraph should be used to formulate a big idea, so don’t split one thing into multiple paragraphs
- Don’t copy-paste
- If you have to use ChatGPT, use it only for inspiration, research, and correction
- To know how long it will take to read your text, assume that it takes 1 minute to read 800 characters.
Homework
- Should be interesting and engaging, put yourself in the shoes of the learner, if you would not want to do this homework, probably the learner won’t
- Relevant with the training session
- Diversified and challenging
- Be creative
- Give clear instructions to the learner, don’t assume they will understand everything because you understand everything
- Use Google Classroom capabilities (using video or audio recording, text, Google Slide, etc)
- Remind the learners who didn’t do their homework to do them
- Put realistic deadlines
- Review the homework done by each student with kindness, it’s not about discouraging learners, but about supporting them to learn more and develop their skills and knowledge, think of yourself as a mentor, not as teacher
Quiz
- Think about quiz as a way to make sure learners understood the big points of the session
- Relevant to the session’s content
- Don’t use open questions, you can keep this for homework, instead use multiple choice quiz
- Not more than 10 questions per quiz, not less than 5.
Group Presentation
- Participant should be put in team for some homework, we can assign them to teams of mixed nationality ourselves and invite to get in touch online to prepare a video group presentation about a specific topic (related with civic engagement and (video) games of course)
- Make sure they managed to get in touch together
- Make sure they understood what they have to do
Resources
- Find and collect useful resources to add to your sessions
- Resources can be used to also build the sessions
- Read the resources before using them or sharing them in the session as it might actually not be relevant (sounds obvious, but I prefer to mention it)
- Use diversify resources : Articles, books, podcasts, videos, games (yes, why not, the project itself is about game…), political strategies, pedagogical material, etc.
- If it’s possible to download the resource, save it on the Google Classroom or in your Google Drive, and assign them to the Training Session directly from your own space because links can break and websites can disappear…
